CARTER CREEK WINERY RESORT & SPA CELEBRATES TOP HONORS FOR WINERY AND BREWERY AT PRESTIGIOUS TEXAS COMPETITIONS

JOHNSON CITY, Texas – Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa is proud to announce that both its winery and onsite Old 290 Brewery have recently been recognized with top accolades at two of Texas’ most respected industry competitions. These honors highlight the resort’s continued commitment to excellence in winemaking and craft brewing, further positioning Carter Creek as a leading destination in the Texas Hill Country.

At the 42nd Annual Lone Star International Wine Competition, held June 11-12 in Grapevine, Texas, Carter Creek Winery earned a total of eight medals, including a 2025 Grand Star Sparkling – one of only seven Grand Star designations awarded among more than 300 entries from over 60 wineries.

Top honors went to:

  • NV Carter Creek Sparkling Tempranillo Rosé – Grand Star Sparkling, Gold Medal. This light, effervescent rosé charmed judges with bright berry notes and delicate floral aromas.
  • NV Carter Creek Group Therapy – Gold Medal. A bold blend of Tempranillo, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Petit Verdot, aged 24 months in French oak.

The winery also earned Silver Medals for:

  • 2023 Primitivo, Texas High Plains
  • 2023 Roussanne, Texas High Plains
  • 2023 Estate Red Blend, Texas Hill Country
  • NV Ruby Cuvée, Texas High Plains
  • NV Sparkling Peach, Texas High Plains

Award-winning wines will be featured at future Texas Wine & Grape Growers Association (TWGGA) events and highlighted in upcoming Carter Creek wine programming.

Further underscoring its status as a multifaceted culinary destination, Carter Creek’s Old 290 Brewery was recognized at the 4th Annual Fredericksburg Craft Beer Festival, hosted June 13–14 by the Rotary Club of Fredericksburg. Competing among 180 beers from 39 breweries, Old 290 Brewery brought home two awards:

  • Munich Helles – 2nd Place, Pale Malty German Lager Category. Crisp, clean, and brilliantly filtered, this light-bodied lager impressed with its balanced malt finish.
  • Hell Raiser – 3rd Place, Wood-Aged Beer Category. A robust, full-bodied brown ale aged in bourbon barrels with complex notes of dark chocolate, toffee, and vanilla.

“These achievements reflect the incredible skill and dedication of our winemaking and brewing teams,” said Jeff Carter, president of family-owned Carter Hospitality. “We are grateful to the Texas Wine & Grape Growers Association and the Rotary Club of Fredericksburg for recognizing the craftsmanship behind our products. Congratulations to Master Winemaker Jon McPherson and Head Brewer Justin Zimmerman for continuing to elevate the guest experience at Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa.”
